| Site Description | Unity Church Unitarian (Unity) is a vibrant, active, and ever-evolving liberal religious community of about 870 adults and 215 children and youth . Located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, residing on the homelands of the Dakota Nation, and founded in 1872, the congregation boasts a rich history and tradition of shared ministry. This shared ministry includes an eExecutive Team comprised of the senior minister, minister of faith formation, and executive director, who jointly report to the Board of Trustees. In 2002, members of Unity Church established the Hallman Internship program, named for Rev. Laurel Hallman. From 2002-2019 over twenty interns served at Unity. While the internship program was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and Unity’s interim period, we are excited to restart this program with the recent settlement of a new senior minister. | |
| Job Description | Intern ministers at Unity participate in all aspects of congregational life, including worship planning and preaching, pastoral care, governance, social justice, and faith formation. The specific shape of each internship is developed in conversation with the intern and supervisor in a learning/serving agreement prior to the start of the internship. Unity’s interns have often participated in planning Wednesday night chapel services, as well as participating in regular meetings of the Beloved Community Staff Team, Executive Team, Board, Development Ministry Team, and Community Outreach Ministry Teams. Interns meet weekly with their supervisor, write weekly reflection papers, and meet regularly with the Internship Committee. | |
| Site Accessibility | Site is accessible, excepting pulpit (see note) | |
| Application Procedure | Please email a cover letter describing your call to ministry and how this internship site would deepen your ministry, along with CV and references to oscar@unityunitarian.org by January 15. We anticipate interviewing candidates in early February. | |
| Additional Notes | Unity uses policy governance, and in 2025 will be implementing a new set of ends statements, which will guide the congregations shared ministry for the next five years. The 2025-26 intern will have an opportunity to be on the ‘ground floor’ of the new ends, participating in the first steps of a new iteration of the congregation’s vision. Accessibility note: There are four entrances to the building, two of which are wheelchair accessible. The sanctuary entrance at 733 Portland Avenue and the program entrance on the east side of the church (accessible from the parking lot) are wheelchair accessible. Most of the building is physically accessible to those of all abilities. Exceptions to this include the balcony, bell tower, a second level office, and the chancel, all of which are accessed via stairs. Modifications of the chancel are currently under consideration and would be necessary to allow comfortable wheelchair access. The sanctuary is equipped with an assisted listening system. We also provide American Sign Language (ASL) upon request. Closed captioning is available on our livestream. When we reopened the church building in 2021, we integrated increased video streaming into the church, allowing for online participation in many church programs and activities. We offer large print orders of service every Sunday. The building offers all gender and family restrooms. Restrooms on the main floor have handrails and broad stalls. Unity is a tree nut-free space. | |
