Site Description The Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua is a congregation of approximately 250 adults and 70 children and youth located in downtown Nashua, NH. The Mission of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashua is: We are a welcoming community of faith, inspiring lives of wonder, generosity and courage, serving the world through love in action. We are a vibrant and evolving congregation, originally founded in 1826, and always seeking new ways of embodying our faith in the world. Our minister, Rev. Allison Palm, was called in 2015. In addition to our minister, our staff consists of a full-time Director of Faith Formation, a full-time Church Administrator, and part-time Music Director, Sexton, Bookkeeper, and Faith Formation Assistants. Our staff works collaboratively, with yearly retreats and weekly staff meetings. Worship is central to the life of our congregation. Our worship services are somewhat traditional, but we also seek to incorporate movement, ritual, and participatory elements on a regular basis. Our Sunday morning services are all streamed to Zoom. Music is a vital and important part of our services. Our choir sings nearly every Sunday during the regular church year, and soloists and small groups offer music on a regular basis as well. We are committed to multigenerational worship, and have at least one all ages service every month. We used theme-based ministry for our worship and faith formation programs. Our themes are incorporated in all of our worship services and Children’s Faith Formation programming, as well as in some of our Adult Faith Formation programming. Our Faith Formation programs are also a vital part of our ministry. We offer programs for people of all ages, all overseen by our Director of Faith Formation, Sadie Kahn-Greene. Programs include: workshops for kids based on our values, Our Whole Lives, Coming of Age, Youth Group, Young Adult Group, Covenant Groups, Support Groups, Book Discussions, Spiritual Practices, UU History programs and more. We are deeply committed to working for justice in our immediate community and in the larger world. For the past 18 years, UU Nashua has given away our Sunday collection every week to various local causes, giving away in total about $35,000 each year. We are also an active part of our statewide UU Action Network, our NH Faith in Action Affiliate (Granite State Organizing Project), and the New Hampshire Immigrant Solidarity Network. We have a Social Justice Team, as well as a couple of issue-specific working groups. One is a Racial Justice Working Group, who has partnered with other organizations to launch the NH Community Bail Fund, done work around immigration, and regularly does faith formation programs for the congregation. We also have a Welcoming congregation Working Group and we have just started a group working on Green Sanctuary. Our congregation operates under policy-based governance. Our Minister also serves as Executive Director of the congregation and the head of staff. The Minister and staff are in charge of the day-to-day operations of the congregation, while our Board of Trustees focuses on policy-making, monitoring, and long-term visioning. We have a number of Teams that collaborate with our staff to do the work of the church, always keeping in mind the Mission, Values, and Ends articulated by our Board. This year we are in the midst of major renotvations to our building to improve welcoming, accessibility and sustainability. We hope to be done with construction by the time this internship begins, but the intern will certainly get to be a part of our process of learning how to use our updated space. We are located in Southern New Hampshire, about an hour north of Boston, an easy commute by car.
Job Description This internship would focus on all aspects of parish ministry, giving an intern an opportunity to participate in worship, faith formation, pastoral care, membership & leadership development, social justice, stewardship, and governance & administration. We would tailor the duties of our intern to fit their particular learning needs. There are some regular projects and events that our interns have usually taken the lead on, including orgainizing our annual participation in a community CROP Walk, leading an evening Winter Solstice service, leading worship at least 6 times per year and leading at least one adult faith formation program per year. This is a two-year part-time position, averaging 18-20 hours/week.
Site Accessibility The building is mostly accessible.
Application Procedure Applicants should send a cover letter explaining their interest in UU Nashua, a current resume, a sample sermon and contact information for 3 references to Rev. Allison Palm at minister@uunashua.org.
Additional Notes We are an approved Contextual Education site for Boston University, and therefore can serve as a Field Ed location for any BTI student. We have also worked with students from Meadville Lombard and are familiar with that program. We are also happy to work with your seminary’s requirements for Field Education if you are studying elsewhere. Accessibility: The building is mostly accessible. There is no elevator down to the part of the building where our preschool is, and there is no elevator to the balcony of the sanctuary. Neither of these areas are necessary for the intern’s work. We are happy to work with an intern to make accommodations for their accessibility needs.
