Site Description We are a congregation of approximately 575 individuals from diverse backgrounds located in Richmond, Virginia, on the edge of the historic Carillon neighborhood. Our building features award-winning architectural design, and we have a dedicated professional staff of 18, both full-time and part-time. First UU is an historic urban church situated in what was once the capital of the Confederacy. Our land was originally inhabited by the Powhatan people, and later, it became part of a plantation that enslaved African individuals brought here against their will. Because of this history, we feel a profound sense of responsibility to address these injustices. We have a unique perspective on the inequities present in our community and are committed to combating and eradicating all forms of oppression, starting in Richmond and extending to the broader world. Our Mission Statement is: “We grow in search of Wisdom; We care in support of Community; We act in service of Justice.” We prioritize the key themes of "Grow, Care, Act" in all of our decision-making and program planning. Social justice is fundamental to our identity, and we take pride in being a diverse, multicultural congregation focused on anti-oppression work.
Job Description This internship will be tailored to the intern's learning needs. The large-size church setting provides ample opportunities for the intern to gain exposure and experience in all the arts of ministry, including (but not limited to) preaching and worship, social justice organizing and visioning, lifespan religious education, pastoral care and counseling, and administration and management. We expect this work will be both in person (Sundays as well as additional hours during the week, to be arranged with the supervisor) as well as offering some opportunities to work from home. The intern will be responsible for creating a plan that addresses self-identified learning goals. The intern is given wide latitude to fulfill learning goals and address growing edges. While the intern is expected to engage in weekly reflection sessions with the supervisor, the intern is expected to be self-motivated and take initiative in proactively taking responsibility for their learning and growth.
