Site Description | FUS Mission: As a congregational humanist community, we at the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis foster a free search for knowledge and meaning, strive for justice, and serve one another, the Twin Cities, and beyond. SEEK freely CONNECT authentically SERVE passionately History: Initially gathering as a chapter of the National Liberal League in the 1870's, FUS was established as Unitarian congregation in 1881 where "people without regard to theological differences may unite for mutual helpfulness in intellectual, moral, and religious culture, and humane work." FUS has always attracted progressive social activists. Congregants set up literacy programs for working children and made clothes for the needy. The Women's Alliance of the congregation funded a free delivery room for unwed mothers at the Maternity Hospital of physician and social reformer Martha Ripley. Two congregants served as president of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Association from 1901-1919. Today, FUS identifies as the birthplace of congregational humanism and is a focal point for humanist, freethought, and atheist groups in the Twin Cities. Currrently, FUS is served by an interim minister and they expect to be in search during the 2025/26 church year.
Job Description | This is a wonderful opportunity for an intern who would like to gain experience in parish ministry during an interim period, and who is interested in the intersection of parish ministry and social justice. For the previous 9 years, FUS has had an Assistant Minister whose focus was social justice; the congregation is hoping to re-staff that position after settling a new Senior Minister. The FUS intern would have the opportunity to work with the many social justice teams at FUS, work on community organizing and outreach, while at the same time, gain parish experience in preaching, teaching, and pastoral care. They would also be witness to a search process and the role of an interim minister.
Site Accessibility | Fully accessible including non-gendered washrooms.
Application Procedure | To apply, please submit a letter of interest, including biographical information and professional background; a statement of your ministerial goals or hopes for your internship time; references; and a sample sermon (in written or if possible video form).
