Site Description | First Unitarian Church of St. Louis was founded in 1835. It was the first Unitarian church west of the Mississippi. We are a vibrant congregation of about 200. We have a long history of successful interns. Our congregation loves and respects its interns. First Unitarian is in a unique location both physically and culturally. We are in the historic district of the Central West End: a diverse and beautiful neighborhood that combines turn of the century mansions, apartment buildings, diners, upscale restaurants, theaters, a premier university, a leading medical center and the largest city park in the country—Forest Park, all within walking distance. The congregation is also two blocks south of the north-south divide in one of the most segregated cities in the country. Issues of housing, homelessness, racism, and gentrification play out within the neighborhood, where the congregation has been located since 1917. Combining big city activities with small town convenience, St. Louis offers a lot. Forest Park is the home to a premier zoo, art museum, history museum, (all free) tennis courts, golf courses, biking trails and playgrounds. St. Louis is a sports town with three professional teams: baseball Cardinals, Blues hockey and City soccer. The cultural center of St. Louis is nearby with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra at Powell Hall and the Fox Theater which produces traveling Broadway shows. Housing in the Midwest is reasonably priced, and St. Louis has an international airport as well as an AMTRAK hub. | |
