Site Description The North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, Illinois, is a welcoming and inclusive community of 275 members. One of the core values of the North Shore Unitarian Church is the promotion of social justice and the inherent worth and dignity of every person. The church is actively involved in social justice initiatives and sponsors various programs and events that address important issues such as legislative advocacy, antiracism, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ inclusion. The church offers a variety of worship services and spiritual programming for people of all ages. Sunday morning services are held in the sanctuary and feature music, meditation, and inspiring preaching. The church also offers a number of adult education programs, including book clubs, discussion groups, and workshops on topics such as queer theology and the radical politics of Jesus. The congregation is served by Rev. Lucas Hergert. He has been the minister of the congregation since 2017. He has brought a social justice focus and is actively engaged in advocacy work. He holds a Doctor of Ministry in preaching, and has helped dozens of UU students prepare for ministry. The North Shore Unitarian Church has a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and works to reduce its carbon footprint through a variety of initiatives. The church has planted a prairie garden and implemented a recycling program. The church is also home to a vibrant community of young families, who are an important part of the church's ministry. The church offers a variety of programs and events for children and youth, including Sunday School, youth group, and youth service trips. In addition to its spiritual programming, the North Shore Unitarian Church is also an active member of the local community. The church hosts a number of community events throughout the year, including a Fair Trade Fair with local vendors, a day of service with local organizations, and a rummage sale whose proceeds benefit community programs.  
Job Description The intern minister will gain practical experience in the ministry while also continuing their theological education. They will work closely with the senior minister to learn about the various aspects of ministry, including leading worship, providing pastoral care, and preaching. They may also be involved in outreach and community engagement efforts, as well as administrative tasks such as fundraising and supervision. In addition to their practical experience, the intern will participate in ongoing learning and personal growth opportunities, such as UUMA workshops and retreats, to deepen their understanding of the UU tradition and their own ministerial calling.
