Site Description The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula (UUCMP) is a mid-size congregation located on the coast of California. Our county is home to families of diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, many of whom work in the rich agricultural community of the Salinas Valley. Our community is the only UU congregation in Monterey County. UUCMP offers a rich array of learning opportunities for prospective interns, one of which is our relatively rare co-ministry structure. Our two ministers, Rev. Elaine and Rev. Axel Gehrmann, bring a diversity of experience and education to their positions, a great advantage given the multi-faceted responsibilities of a parish minister. As a result, previous interns have had opportunities to witness two different styles of ministering; and to have access to a wider variety of ways to become involved in congregational life. Members are drawn to our church because of our excellent music program, our deep sense of community and acceptance, our commitment to spiritual growth, our life-long learning opportunities, and our enthusiastic celebration of UU values. We are committed to social justice activities, focusing on antiracism, immigration, homelessness, and environmental issues. In addition, the Monterey Peninsula is a hotbed of learning. Academics, scientists, and specialists work in its numerous educational centers, including the marine laboratories of Stanford University, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, the Defense Language Institute, and the Naval Postgraduate School. Other academic centers include California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), which focuses on providing educational opportunities to first generation students, and two community colleges, Hartnell College in nearby Salinas, and Monterey Peninsula College. These renowned institutions provide numerous opportunities for interns to continue their learning by attending lectures, workshops, and classes, and by volunteering. Last, it is not possible to adequately describe the beauty of Monterey County. Visitors and residents alike enjoy our beautiful white sand beaches and many associated activities, such as scuba diving, surfing, whale watching, golfing, and hiking. We are very proud of, and have a deep connection to nature, and cannot help but experience a profound sense of the interconnected web of life that is so present here on California’s Monterey Peninsula.
Job Description The Parish Ministry Intern will work with the Co-Ministers Revs. Elaine & Axel Gehrmann to gain experience in all areas of church life. We are open to customizing learning opportunities to build on your strengths and/or to cultivate new skills.
