Site Description The UU Church of the Monterey Peninsula is mid-size congregation located on the Central coast of California, and is the only UU congregation in Monterey County. The Peninsula is a tourism center offering kayaking, scuba diving, surfing, whale watching, beach- going, golf and hiking. The area is home to a well-educated, affluent population drawn by its world-renowned natural beauty and its many cultural activities, as well as its proximity to the sophisticated population centers around San Francisco. This area attracts academics, scientists and specialists that work in many of its centers of learning including California State University, Monterey Bay, the marine laboratories of Stanford University, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, two Defense Department educational centers - the Defense Language Institute and the Naval Postgraduate School, and two community colleges, Hartnell College in Salinas and Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey. The County is also home to families of diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, many of whom work in the rich agricultural community of the Salinas Valley. Members are drawn to our church because of the sense of community it provides, the intellectual stimulation it affords, and the opportunities it offers for spiritual growth and a celebration of UU values. We are committed to social justice activities, focusing on antiracism, immigrant rights, homeless issues and the environment. We place a high value on our excellent music program in our congregational life, and have a deep connection to nature and a profound sense of the interconnected web of life that is so present here on California's Monterey Peninsula.
Job Description The Parish Ministry Intern will work with the Co-Ministers Revs. Elaine & Axel Gehrmann to gain experience in all areas of church life. There will be opportunities for worship, preaching, pastoral care, teaching, administration, Religious Exploration, social justice work and community-building. There is some flexibility to build on one's strengths and/or to cultivate new skills.
