| Site Description | The Unitarian Church of Vancouver (‘UCV’) celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009. We are a healthy congregation (financially and otherwise), the third largest in Canada and the senior of 4 congregations in the greater Vancouver area. We are active members of the BC Regional District of the Canadian Unitarian Council and local ministers participate in the Pacific Northwest District of the UUA and the Canadian chapter (UUMOC) of the UUMA. We have a full time settled Parish Minister (Rev Dr Steven Epperson), as well as a DLRE, Music Director, Choir Director and administrative staff and we are affiliated with an ordained UU Community Minister (Rev Laura Friedman) who works with people living in poverty in Vancouver’s downtown eastside, often cited as the poorest urban neighborhood in Canada.. Rev Epperson is a member of the Western Regional Subcommittee on Candidacy and thus has experience in the ministerial formation process. Our congregation is theologically diverse and active in a wide variety of environmental and social justice issues including climate change solutions, food security, homelessness, refugee settlement, and LGBTQ rights. Many congregants participate directly in Rev Friedman’s street ministry. UCV also has active Children’s, Youth and Adult RE programs. Our music program is taken very seriously and features diverse musical forms (instrumental, and choral and solo voice) and genres (including classical, jazz, folk and world music). Vancouver itself is a beautiful, cosmopolitan and occasionally funky city on Canada’s west coast, 2.5 hours north of Seattle. Sometimes rated the 2nd most livable city in the world (next to Geneva), the city is blessed with a temperate (albeit damp) climate and surrounded by ocean, mountains, forest and lakes. Indoors, the city is home to several universities including the University of British Columbia, which houses the Vancouver School of Theology, and numerous community colleges, art galleries, festivals, theatres and concert halls. | |
| Job Description | We served as an internship site for many years, a practice that stopped in the mid-90s coincident with the retirement of a long-time (35 year) senior parish minister. It is now something we are returning to in the 8th year of Rev Epperson’s ministry. We are looking for an intern who wants to partner with our minister, staff and members to experience the full range of ministry including parish work, Lifespan RE, pastoral care and counseling, worship services, rites of passage, and social justice/environmental activism. You will also learn about financial stewardship, administrative and personnel matters. American candidates may enjoy a Canadian perspective and we are ready to assist in answering work/visa questions and issues. We know we have gifts to give and to receive by hosting an intern at UCV. | |
| Site Accessibility | Accessible by mass transit, wheelchair accessible. | |
| Application Procedure | Please submit electronically in one email: resume with references, covering letter, 2 sample sermons to internsearch@vancouverunitarians.ca We strongly encourage candidates of any gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation to apply. | |
