Site Description First Unitarian Denver is one of our (too few) truly urban congregations. Located 10 blocks from the state capitol and downtown Denver, we occupy 1/4 of a city block in a wonderful facility of gray stone and stained glass. Denver is a thoroughly metropolitan city. The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains dominates the Western horizon, and can be reached within half an hour from downtown. The immediate neighborhood of First Unitarian is mixed residential and commercial city street with major hospitals, fine restaurants, thrift stores, work programs and homeless shelters all within walking distance. The vast majority of our members are urban dwellers, living within five miles of the church. We are actively engaged in education and advocacy regarding civil marriage, and with issues of affordable housing and homelessness in central Denver. Ministry is valued here. First Unitarian has two associated Ministers, has had five recent interns, done two ordinations, and the Revs. Jim and Nan Hobart were recently named ministers emeriti. The Front Range cluster of the Mountain Desert District UUMA chapter is active and intentionally nourishing to students. First Unitarian Denver has experienced steady growth over the past three years. Average Sunday attendance has grown from around 150 to nearly 300 since 2002, necessitating a transition to two services each Sunday. We are in the final stages of an intentional transition from our historical pastoral model to being a program church. Some recent and indicative happenings at First Unitarian are: housing homeless families in our building through the Interfaith Hospitality Network; joyfully giving away our offering plate one Sunday each month to local outreach; holding annual “Standing on the Side of Love” worship services at the State Capitol, and being one of the first congregations in the country to complete Living the Welcoming Congregation. We completed a capitol campaign to build an elevator and finished construction in November 2007, making our historic building fully accessible. Our congregational project for 2007/2008, and continuing in 2009, is to become a “Green Sanctuary.” We recently hosted the UU Musicians Network annual conference, and the Urban Ministries Conference, and last year hosted both the DRUUM annual meeting, and the Continental Interweave Conference. We have a small group ministry program consisting of 16 active groups serving nearly 150 people, and our Young Adult group regularly reaches over 40. The opportunities for ministry, practice, and learning are rich.
Job Description We are seeking an intern with a passion for parish life, a solid ministerial presence, excellent preaching skills, and a strong preference for an urban setting. This is a healthy congregation (financially and otherwise) with a rich history and a fine potential. We seek an intern who will learn ministry by practicing ministry. Ministerial Interns at First Unitarian can expect to partner with the minister, staff, and members around pastoral care, small group ministries, adult religious education, preaching, special services and rites of passage, social activism, and administration/fund-raising.
Site Accessibility Fully accessible
Application Procedure Please send a resume with cover letter, three letters of reference, two sermons, and a page (or so) that outlines; 1) your ministerial aspirations, 2) where you are in the process, 3) a brief assessment of your personal strengths and areas for growth, and 4) why you are choosing to apply at First Unitarian Denver. An autobiographical statement of no more than five pagers is optional. Interviews (by phone or in person) with Rev. Mike Morran, and the Intern Committee may be scheduled for mid-December.
Additional Notes This is a time of great spiritual growth at our church. We have begun a new and very intentional program of developing Unitarian Universalism as a specific and transformative spiritual path. Among other things, we’ve begun a new adult RE program called, “On the Path,” and launched WHOLE SOUUL LIVING, a web-based series of monthly themes and resources: www.wholesouulliving.net
Application Deadline December 1st, 2009
Selection Date Before December 31st
